Grade Levels At-a-Glance

**Please Note - Curriculum selections are ongoing and are subject to change.  We see all curriculum merely as a tool to help provide structure to our students’ education.  Therefore, we fully expect our teachers will adapt the chosen curriculum, making additions and alterations as needed. 

KINDER

Families will study the Bible together using Bible Study Fellowship curriculum as a base.  We will memorize sections of Scripture together and begin working our way through the New City Catechism.

History will be studied school-wide in cycles.  We will study the ancient time period first in a grade-appropriate manner using the Biblioplan Family Plan as a guide for selecting our base texts, literature and activities.  The lives and works of significant artists and composers will be woven into our studies.

Reading instruction will be individualized and phonetically based.  Teachers will focus on creating a love for reading and developing skills in comprehension through read-alouds of adapted versions of classical literature.  Students will participate in literacy stations.

Spell to Write and Read uses a hear-say-write-see method that builds upon students' knowledge of 70 phonograms.  Kindergarten students will begin by learning the alphabet phonograms and progress through the other multi-letter phonograms. 

Penmanship instruction will come from A Reason for Handwriting.

Kindergarteners will begin Dimensions Math K with a focus on developing number sense and problem-solving skills. Students will also engage in sensory motor-skills activities to promote brain growth and increase memory and motor skills.

Elemental Science’s Intro to Science will provide a hands-on, notebook-based approach to surveying different areas of science, including nature study.

SECOND GRADE

Science will be hands-on and notebook-based using Elemental Science’s Grammar Stage science books.

Latin will be introduced using Song School Latin.

 

FOURTH GRADE

Families will study the Bible together using Bible Study Fellowship curriculum as a base.  We will memorize sections of Scripture together and begin working our way through the New City Catechism.

History will be studied school-wide in cycles.  We will study the ancient time period first in a grade-appropriate manner using the Biblioplan Family Plan as a guide for selecting our base texts, literature and activities. Teachers will assess each student’s penmanship.  If further instruction is needed, A Reason for Handwriting will continue to be used.

Science will be hands-on and notebook-based using Elemental Science’s Grammar Stage science books.

Latin will be introduced using Song School Latin.

 

FIFTH GRADE

Families will study the Bible together using Bible Study Fellowship curriculum as a base.  We will memorize sections of Scripture together and begin working our way through the New City Catechism.

History will be studied school-wide in cycles.  We will study the ancient time period first in a grade-appropriate manner using the Biblioplan Family Plan as a guide for selecting our base texts, literature and activities. The lives and works of significant artists and composers will be woven into our studies.

Well-Ordered Language will teach students to analyze the grammatical parts of speech through classic children’s literature and to express their thoughts clearly and accurately.

Writing instruction will be based on the Institute for Excellence in Writing’s structure and style writing method coordinating with the current history cycle.

Keyboarding will begin at home using Typing.com.

In fifth grade, teachers will supplement Saxon Math 7/6 with additional problem solving and hands-on instruction.  Students capable of more challenge will be encouraged to use Beast Academy 4. **Dimensions Math 5 will be adopted at this grade-level during the 2023-24 school year.

Science will be hands-on and notebook-based using Elemental Science’s Logic Stage science books.

Latin will be introduced using Latin for Children.

 

 

SIXTH GRADE

In sixth grade, teachers will supplement Saxon Math 8/7 with additional problem solving and hands-on instruction.  Students capable of more challenge will be encouraged to use Beast Academy 5. **Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, Dimensions 6 will be used at this grade level.

Latin will be introduced using Latin for Children.
